The UnderH2O Explorer Program empowers youth in San Diego and Los Angeles by removing barriers to careers in marine science and cultural heritage preservation. Through hands-on training, participants earn certifications in scuba diving, ROV operation, coral restoration, and cultural heritage research, opening pathways into the Blue Economy while equipping them to preserve Afro and Indigenous histories beneath the water. Designed for girls and young women ages 14–21, this groundbreaking two-year journey blends STEM education, adventure travel, and cultural storytelling. From piloting ROVs along San Diego’s coast to study Kumeyaay maritime traditions to earning scuba certifications in the Florida Keys and conducting fieldwork in Belize, Roatán, and Africa, participants gain real-world experience connecting ocean exploration with historical preservation. Each discovery becomes part of the We The People Museum, transforming research into interactive digital exhibits that celebrate ocean-connected communities.
